Celebrating the life of
Robert Garry Walker
July 23, 1954 - June 23, 2024
On June 23, 2024 Robert G. (Garry) Walker, 69 left his earthly body following a long illness. Garry was a loving husband, father, and surrogate father.
Garry was born July 23, 1954, to Joseph and Helen Walker in Savannah, GA. His dad’s work led the family to Elizabeth, LA where he attended school at Elizabeth Elementary and Junior High. The family returned to Savannah when Garry was 15. He attended Mercer Middle School and graduated from Groves High School in Garden City.
Garry achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in his youth and enjoyed working with Boy Scouts and his sons in their younger years. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing, and gardening and shared his love for the outdoors with his wife and 5 sons as often as possible.
Garry was blessed with many talents including music. He played piano and all brass instruments. His only regret was not having an opportunity to learn to play bagpipes in honor of his Scottish ancestry.
He loved to grill and cook outside and was happiest feeding family and friends both at home and at work.
Garry retired in 2022 from Memorial Health after 35 years of service. While there he formed lifelong friendships and had the opportunity to cultivate his commitment to selflessly doing for others.
Garry is predeceased by his father, mother, sister Patricia, brother Daniel (Danny) as well as brother-in-law Frederick (Bubber) and nephew Frederick (Freddy). Surviving family members include his wife of 37 years Melinda, sons Christopher and Joshua Walker, adopted sons Adam and Alan Collins Walker and surrogate son Jamie Mikell, 5 grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren, 2 surrogate grandchildren, 2 surrogate great grandchildren, his sister Judy Walker Feus and brother Anthony (Tony) - Karen and several nephews and nieces.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 29th at 11:00 AM at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors on Hodgson Memorial Drive in Savannah.
Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society in lieu of flowers.

Thoughts and Prayers are with Garry’s family, friends, and former colleagues. Garry was an amazing man who I had the honor and privilege of working with for 20 years. I will always remember how my mom and Garry always had a competition on who had the better Christmas Hat! Garry’s sense of humor was contagious and he cared about everyone!! I will miss him dearly!!

A fine Southern gentleman that I had the privilege to know if he told you something you could take it to the bank and would never come back on his word and it was a pleasure knowing and working with Gary at Memorial hospital for many years. If one needed a dear friend, he was one you could count on. Our prayers. Go to the family and Gary. We'll meet you again one day your friend Tim.

Garry and I were in the band together in middle school and in high school. His friendly demeanor and wonderful sense of humor stayed the same for all the years I knew him. He was a man of great integrity and displayed a very charitable nature towards all, including animals. My sincere condolences to his wife (my friend for over sixty years), all his boys, and his entire family, and also to his friends. Garry leaves a big void in this world. Revelation 21:4

Gary is the reason I have a wonderful husband and two beautiful, successful children. He set us up and it resulted in a marriage lasting 43 years so far. I was always thankful to him for that. We both worked with him at M&M Supermarkets and my son worked at Memorial. Gary always took the opportunity to remind my son he would not be here if not for him. He was right. My deepest condolences to your family. He was a wonderful man.
